וועיגהטפּאָאָלינג: וואָס איז עס און ווי צו לערנען אַ הונט?

Weightpooling is the lifting of weights. Surely you have at least once seen videos in which a dog pulls a tire or other load. This is weight pooling. However, this sport includes not only a demonstration of physical strength, but also the ability of a dog to concentrate on a specific task and bring it to the end.

Dogs of different weight categories can participate in competitions: the weight of dogs can vary from 15 to 55 kg. They are divided into 6 groups. The International Weightpooling Association lists dogs of various breeds and even outbreds. This sport can be practiced by both the mastiff and the greyhound.

Weightpooling has its roots in the gold mines of Canada and Alaska. He was described in his books by Jack London. But then, of course, things were much more cruel for dogs. Now the conditions have changed.

The handler must keep his distance, do not touch the dog, do not urge it or lure it. Anything that judges can regard as a threat to the dog is prohibited. If the judge decides that the load is too heavy, the dog is not withdrawn from the competition, but helped so that it does not feel like a failure. Dogs must not be harmed during the competition.

How to teach a dog how to weightpool?

For the first lesson you will need a harness, a long leash and the weight itself (not very heavy). As well as your four-legged friend’s favorite treat.

Never tie anything to the collar! The dog should not feel discomfort during this exercise.

Put a harness on your dog and tie a weight to the leash. Ask the dog to walk a little, at first just to create tension on the leash, praise and treat.

Then ask the dog to take one step – praise and treat. Then more.

Gradually, the distance that the dog walks before receiving the treat increases.

It is necessary to monitor the condition of the dog. She shouldn’t be overtired. And remember that this is entertainment, which means that it should bring pleasure not only to you, but also to your four-legged friend.
